How I write a term's worth of report comments in under 2 hours
Report writing is one of those jobs where the hardest part is often getting from a blank page to a useful first draft. AI can help with that first draft, as long as the teacher keeps control of the evidence.
Prepare the evidence first
Before opening an AI tool, gather the marks, effort notes, behaviour patterns and one specific example for each pupil. The quality of the report depends on the quality of that input.
I use a repeatable structure: strength, evidence, next step and encouragement. That keeps the comment balanced and stops it drifting into vague praise.
Edit for the child, not the template
Once the draft exists, I read it as if I were the parent. Does it sound like their child? Is the next step specific enough to act on? Is the tone fair?
The time saving comes from avoiding the blank page, not from skipping professional judgement. The final comment should still sound like a teacher who knows the pupil.
